Unlikeable Book
Video Direction, Photography, Creative Writing & Creative Direction
Unlikeable is a body of work focused on the personal, complex, and evolving relationship with feminism, culminating in a printed book with images bracketed by personal essays and poetry, weaving them into a raw and vulnerable expression of the conflicts in the experience of working as a woman artist inside of and against the patriarchy.
The structure is loosely built around a series of “I should” or “you should” statements about feminism, the patriarchy, and what a feminist woman artist “should” do and be aswell as asking how do you embody authority and authenticity in your work in opposition to the forces of the patriarchy and how do you empower other women and humans to do the same?
These statements are investigated, crossed out, revised, and re-defined in a rhythmic, purposeful, clear, open and vulnerable manner through video, photography, poetry, written statements and essays. The work delves into the personal and daily pressurized work of ever becoming a better feminist, reflections on success, the pressure to conform, and what it means when “feminism” is co-opted as a trend in the industry.
Unlikeable premiered on Dazed, and is now in production for publishing.
